Story Idea: The rebuilding of China will take a number of years

1. Main Story: Why should I care? Five million people have been left homeless from the May 12 earthquake.

2. Main Story: What kind of damage has been done? Pretty much everything has been destroyed from houses, buildings, streets and rivers have developed into lakes.

3. Main Story: How many people have been killed or injured from the earthquake? The number of confirmed deaths is over 80,000 people with almost 20,000 people missing.

4. Photo: What kind of relief has been provided? The Ordinary Chinese loaded their cars with dried noodles and bottled waters and drove to the affected areas. A number of people have been rescued from the school’s rubble. Many people are being treated for their wounds and injuries.

Oregon Moms

For this story I chose to put it in the category of hard news. The story was about a very serious topic and it was something people care about and want to read about. For a woman having a baby, having the baby drug free is very important to a lot of mothers out there. It is a very serious topic that can affect the child and the mother for the rest of their lives. Mothers can be affected by postpartum depression and it can be very tough on them. I believed this to be a hard news story because of the seriousness of the story and the impact it has on the mother, children and readers.

Yes, I believe their was a clear bias in the story. The author showed two sides to the story by giving examples and real life stories of women who used drugs for their child and women who did not use drugs for their child. The author talked about how both sides were affected and the outcome of their decisions.

Clinton hopes to resonate the economy, forest health and an expired federal time payment. Clinton also expressed her support for more thinning in federal forests.

Saturday May 10- Yahoo News

Feminists are divided between Obama and Clinton surprisingly. Feminists might be supporting front runner Barack Obama because feminists believe the Clinton campaign is trying to capitalize on racial divisions and to impugn Obama’s patriotism.

Sunday May 11- The Columbian

Obama added five super delegates. Clinton’s slipped to eighty seven delegates just as Obama embarked on his run of eleven straight victories.

Monday May 12- The Oregonian

Presidential candidate John McCain will be in Oregon to talk about how he could combat global warming.

Former President Bill Clinton is supporting his wife Hilary Clinton to talk to audiences about Hilary’s outline on ending the war in Iraq, bringing home the troops, rebuilding the military, restore manufacturing jobs to the United States, jumpstart medical and technical research and to unravel the knots in the economy, education, health care and energy.

Tuesday May 13- The Columbian

John McCain declared global warming real, but reached out to Democrats and independents with a free market solution that includes capping carbon fuel emissions.

Wednesday May 14- The Oregonian

Mississippi Democrat Travis Childers counters his support of gun rights and opposition to abortion and his social values match those of most voters in the deeply conservative district.

Thursday May 15- The Columbian

Michigan Democrat John Edwards endorsed formal rival Barack Obama on Wednesday, a move designed to help the party’s likely presidential nominee as Clinton refuses to give up her long shot candidacy.

1. How are quotes used in the newspieces?

For quotes on the news stories I listened to they had the peoples interviews recorded and then played them in the news stories. The reporters never said quote or end quote and they had the interviewed peoples face to face answers and testimonies recorded on tape. The recordings were played on the news and then played during the stories.

2. What kinds of quotes are used in the newspiece? (Are they elaborate, descriptive or what is that something extra the quotes add to the story)

The newspieces had dialogue quotes and the interviews were very descriptive dealing with the material. The recordings were exact words from the interviewers and the people being interviewed in every story I listened to. Quotes add a more in depth look in stories and give you the perspective from someone who was there and their thoughts on the situation. Quotes are a very good addition to stories and give them a more interesting outlook.

The bad lead I found was in Monday's April 21 article in The Columbian:

Wealthy, self financed congressional candidate Jack Davis says the McCain Feignolds act's "Millionaire's Amendment," which raises the contribution limits for opponents of wealthy, self-financed candidates, is not only unfair but also unconstitutional, and his lawyers will try to persuade the Supreme Court of that Tuesday.

I believe this lead is very lengthy and has way too many word descriptions in the first sentence. Wealthy and self financed are not needed in the first sentence because they are long and I feel like the writer is trying to focus on the description of Jack Davis too much.

The good lead I found was in Monday's April 21 article in The Columbian:

Authorities say an 18 year old South Carolina student is behind bars after collecting the supplies needed to bomb his school.

This is a very well written lead because it is right to the point and is very short in detail. This lead provided you with everything you needed to know in the first sentence and has the five w's and an h in it. The article also says that the student was accused and not found guilty.

This article ran on April 14th in The Columbian and can be found on page A6.

The article was entitled "Congolese jet veers off runway; at least 21 killed. This article had timeliness for being very recent. I believe the article had a sense of impact in it as well because readers are affected when people are killed in serious accidents. Also, this article had the quality of daily news due to the story being published the day after the accident.
